A feature-complete public beta release has appeared for SQL Server 2008 R2, the next version of Microsoft's database technology, giving organizations a chance to evaluate the version in near-finished form. Due in the first half of 2010, R2 will deliver an add-in for Excel 2010 called PowerPivot that enables users to analyze large data sets in memory, create reports and charts, and publish the results to other users via SQL Server Analysis Services and SharePoint Server 2010.
