Executive Summary

An epidemic of viruses targeted at Microsoft Outlook and the massive press coverage of such viruses has prompted anxious CEOs to pressure their information technology (IT) managers for assurances that their organizations are safe from Internet-based threats. Anyone who considers these events to be isolated—it will blow over and then we can continue with business as usual—is neither wise nor realistic. As much as organizations might loathe applying scarce IT resources to this threat, they don’t have a choice. IT managers must understand the nature of the problem and introduce comprehensive protective measures that guard against business losses caused by malicious attacks, whether from external or internal sources.

This report focuses on the problems posed by e-mail-borne viruses to Microsoft-based systems and offers strategies to help reduce the risks to reasonable levels.
