• Microsoft has discontinued retail channel sales of Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Services Edition (TSE) and NT 4.0 TSE Client Access Licenses (CALs). The move is Microsoft’s first step in phasing out the product, which contains a special version of the NT 4.0 operating system and requires its own service packs (separate from those for NT 4.0). NT 4.0 TSE has been supplanted by Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Advanced Server (AS); both contain a newer and more capable version of Terminal Services integrated directly into the base operating system kernel. Microsoft says it will continue to offer product support for NT 4.0 TSE. Also, if a new NT 4.0 service pack were offered in the future (none are currently planned), Microsoft would ship a TSE version as well. Customers that want to deploy new installations of NT 4.0 TSE can purchase Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 AS (and Windows 2000 Server Terminal Services CALs) and exercise their "downgrade rights" as specified in the product’s license agreement. (Downgrade rights permit the purchaser to install a prior version of the software.) NT 4.0 TSE CD media, if needed, is available through Microsoft’s Worldwide Fulfillment Center. For an in-depth description of Windows 2000 Terminal Services, see "Terminal Services Moves into the Mainstream" on page 3 of the Mar. 2000 Update.
