The first service pack for the SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition (SQL CE) database engine fixes bugs and makes the engine compatible with development tools for the Pocket PC 2002 platform. The SQL CE database engine runs on Windows CE devices and can exchange data with SQL Server 2000 servers through replication. It enables developers to create database-driven applications (e.g., order entry applications for delivery drivers) that run on a mobile device and work even when the device is offline. (For background, see "SQL Server for Windows CE Is Released" on page 17 of the Dec. 2000 Update.) Service Pack 1 includes some new features, such as the ability to store temporary databases (TEMPDB) on removable media such as flash memory cards. The service pack doesn't include any server-side updates, as those have been delivered in SQL Server 2000 Service Packs 1 and 2.
