Microsoft has released Datacenter Server Limited Edition (Datacenter LE), an interim version of its Datacenter Server to better support 16-way multiprocessor systems. Although the previous version of Datacenter supported such systems, Datacenter LE includes new OS-level optimizations designed to improve performance on systems with 16 to 32 processors.

Datacenter LE is only available through qualified OEMs. Currently, Unisys is the only vendor shipping systems with 16 or more CPUs and is the only qualified OEM for Datacenter LE. In addition, Datacenter LE is an interim release: support will end 90 days after Windows .NET Datacenter Server is released to manufacturing. Customers using the Limited Edition will get free upgrades to .NET Datacenter.
