The Apache open-source Web server can now run ASP.NET applications, but only on Windows. Covalent's new Enterprise Ready Server module for Apache 2.0 might raise the profile of Microsoft's ASP.NET Web development technology among open-source enthusiasts, whom Microsoft itself is targeting with offerings such as the free Web Matrix development environment. (See "Web Matrix Makes ASP.NET More Accessible" on page 21 of the Aug. 2002 Update.) However, Covalent's module does not enable developers to run ASP.NET applications on Linux or other non-Windows operating systems, as it requires Microsoft's Windows-only .NET Framework software. Covalent, which employs many of the developers who develop and maintain the Apache code, is at www.covalent.net. For further information on ASP.NET and the .NET Framework, see the Feb. 2002 Research Report, "The .NET Development Platform."
