This table outlines the various Windows Server 2003 Client Access
License (CAL) options that will be available when Windows Server 2003 ships in 2003.
Changes related to Windows .NET Terminal Server are covered in the table "Terminal Server CAL Changes in Windows Server 2003".
| CAL |
What It
Covers |
| Existing Options Carried
Forward |
| No CAL required |
Anonymous access to a Windows server when user
identification is impossible or not needed, such as anonymous access to a Windows-powered
Web server or to a firewall/caching server. |
| CAL in per-server mode (concurrent) |
One log-on session to a Windows server, most
popular in organizations with a single Windows server shared by multiple staff. |
| CAL in per-seat mode, assigned to a device (Note: The mode name will be changed to "per device or per user") |
Access by one device to all Windows servers in
an organization, popular in larger organizations in which users access multiple Windows
servers. |
| New Options |
| CAL in per-user mode |
Access by one user to all Windows servers in
an organization from multiple devices, such as a desktop, a portable PC, and a Pocket PC. |
| CAL for external user or device in per-device
or per-user mode |
Access to a Windows server by a single
external user or device, such as a PC at a customers site used to check order status
on a vendors server. (The vendor could buy a device CAL for that device or a user
CAL for that external user.) |
| External Connector (EC) |
Authenticated access to a Windows server by an
unlimited number of external users or their devices, such as where a large number of
customers need to access a shipment-tracking system on a vendors server. The vendor
would buy an EC for each server that is being accessed by those customers. |
