The following is a chart accompanying an article published by Directions on Microsoft, an independent research firm focused exclusively on Microsoft strategy & technology. More samples of our content, as well as a list of upcoming articles and reports are also available.

The following chart enumerates updates to the Windows Media (WM) platform since 1999. The two left columns show versions of the platform and the dates they were first released. The middle column shows which components were updated as part of the platform update. The right column contains additional information about each platform version, such as its ship vehicle.

WM Technologies 4.0 Spring 1999 Codecs, DRM, tools

Some components included with WM Services 4.0, which shipped with Windows Server 2000.
WM Technologies 7.0* Summer 2000 Codecs, DRM, tools

Some components included with WM Player 7, which shipped with Windows Me.
WM 8.0 Fall 2001 Codecs, tools Codecs included with WM Player 8, which shipped with Windows XP.
WM 9 Series Late 2002 Codecs, Tools, DRM Major platform update included many new codecs, SDKs. Updates continued through 2004.
WM 10 Fall 2004 DRM (one new codec released in 2006) Coincided with release of Windows Media Player 10, Portable Media Center platform.
WM 11 Fall 2006 Tools Some new tools released to coincide with WM Player 11, which shipped in fall 2006.

*Platform version skipped from 4 to 7 to match the Windows Media Player, which was on a different development schedule.
