Analyst ReportAzure Cosmos DB 2019 Updates and Roadmap
- Azure Cosmos DB is receiving continued feature and performance improvements across all data models.
- Management and security updates simplify deployments and help customers expand usage.
- Planned updates will add more programming features and popular open-source components, like Spark machine learning and Jupyter notebooks.
Azure Cosmos DB is a hosted, multi-model database service, using proprietary and open source components, such as Cassandra, MongoDB, and SQL, which supports an array of data formats that are commonly used for Web and mobile applications. Microsoft has shown its commitment to the service with continued investment, added integrations with Azure services, and the planned introduction of tools, like Spark, that are used in other Microsoft database offerings.
Overview
Azure Cosmos DB is multi-model: the service is not restricted to a single database type, and it can host multiple database formats, such as Documents used in Web applications, Graphs for complex data, and Structured found in traditional columnar-based databases. The multiple database formats are stored in a single environment, where they all share the same global distribution, scaling, and security infrastructure. The service is primarily designed for globally distributed, data-intensive applications that need high performance and global scaling, such as online e-commerce sites and multiplayer online games.
