Azure Information Protection (AIP) is a Microsoft-hosted service that helps organizations find and protect sensitive files and other content from access by unauthorized users. AIP can aid compliance with privacy and security standards and help organizations protect information. New features will let organizations find and protect more types of content in more situations, including files that are stored on-premises, shared with cloud-managed applications, and opened on mobile devices. However, many of these features will likely require additional licenses.

Protect Files in More Places

AIP helps organizations discover, classify, and label documents and other business content that contains sensitive information and optionally protect content from access by unauthorized users. AIP is a superset of Azure Rights Management (Azure RM), a Microsoft-hosted service that encrypts documents and e-mail. AIP adds technology to define policies for classifying sensitivity of content and use those policies to automatically locate, classify, and optionally encrypt content to protect it.
