Two services for the Windows Mobile 6.x platform, My Phone and the Windows Marketplace for Mobile Web site, have been discontinued even though the platform is still in Mainstream support. The decision sends an important signal to customers and partners using any specialized device platform like Windows Mobile: volatility in the device market means that a platform’s supporting services can quickly be discontinued or replaced, regardless of the status of the platform itself.

Discontinued Services for Mainstream Platform

Windows Mobile is a specialized platform designed to facilitate the quick development of devices, including smartphones. It is based on the Windows Embedded Compact OS (formerly CE) and targets processors based on the ARM architecture. Windows Mobile became generally available in May 2007, and versions of it will continue in Mainstream support for the next two to three and a half years. The discontinued services offered backup, applications, and other support for Windows Mobile 6.x devices.
