Exchange Online Unified Messaging is being retired and replaced by a Microsoft-hosted service called Cloud Voicemail. Exchange Online Unified Messaging offers voice mail and phone access to the inbox via an auto-attendant and can be used by Skype for Business Online, Skype for Business Server, Lync Server, and third-party phone systems.

Cutoff Dates in Late 2019 and Early 2020

Retirement dates and effects depend on the phone system the customer is using with the service, and whether the customer is using the Exchange Online Unified Messaging Auto Attendant.

Third-party phone systems lose Exchange Online Unified Messaging on Dec. 1, 2019, and will need to move to a phone system supported by Cloud Voicemail or find a competing voice-mail service before then.

Skype for Business Online, Lync Server 2013, and Skype for Business Server phone systems will be migrated from Exchange Online Unified Messaging to Cloud Voicemail by Feb. 2020. Microsoft says it will migrate these customers in stages beginning in Mar. 2019 and the process will be transparent, although customers can request temporary delays in migration from Microsoft support.
