Other Improvements: Device and Driver Support

Windows 2000 provides built-in support for several kinds of devices that NT 4.0 ignored. Chief among these for laptops are the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) infrared link protocols, as well as external buses such as Universal Serial Bus (USB) and IEEE 1394 "Firewire." Laptop users rely on infrared to provide convenient, cable-free data links between their laptops and other devices (especially desktop PCs). Users also increasingly rely on external buses like USB for connecting add-on devices to their laptops.
