In Brief: Windows ME beta 3 released to testers

Microsoft has released Windows Me Beta 3—code-named Millennium—to testers and stated clearly that this is a consumer operating system. Windows Me is a minor, and probably the last, upgrade to the Windows 98 series. The next Microsoft operating system for consumers—code-named Whistler—will be built on the Windows 2000 code base and is still more than a year away. Although OEMs are expected to begin shipping a final version of Windows Me on new systems by late summer, it is not clear that the new features are compelling enough to prompt many customers to upgrade from Windows 9x.
