In Brief: NT and Windows 2000 win security ratings

• Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 have earned the FIPS 140-1 level 1 rating for cryptographic security. NT 4.0 also qualified for the C2 computer system security rating. The ratings come more than 18 months later than planned, but remove a barrier to the use of Windows NT by U.S. government departments and their suppliers. FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) 140-1 is a standard for cryptographic algorithms used in "sensitive but unclassified" applications. C2 is a level in the U.S.
