Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 Network Concepts

Both Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 group users and resources (such as machines) into domains. Each domain has one or more servers called domain controllers that authenticate users and control access to resources in the domain. Domains also include member servers (servers that aren't domain controllers, such as file, print, terminal, and Web servers), and workstations (including laptops).
