In Brief: Interix 2.2 Unix emulation environment ships

• Microsoft has released Interix 2.2, a Unix operating environment for Windows 2000 systems. The Interix software—acquired last year when Microsoft purchased Softway Systems—enables a Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 machine to emulate a Unix system, including APIs, services, commands, and utilities, so that most Unix programs run with little or no modification. By allowing a Windows 2000 Pro desktop to run Win32 and Unix applications simultaneously, Interix 2.2 eliminates the need for separate Unix and Windows machines for users within mixed Unix/NT environments.
