NTLMv2 Closes Security Holes

The Active Directory client distribution includes a client for Windows NT LAN Manager (NTLM) version 2, an improved version of NT 4.0's user authentication protocol. Among other improvements, NTLMv2 strengthens encryption of passwords sent over the network, making them less vulnerable to password cracking tools, such as L0phtcrack. NTLMv2 already shipped for NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4, but it wasn't available for Windows 95 and 98 until now.
