In Brief: Microsoft acquires Japan's #2 cable company

Microsoft bought a controlling interest in Japan's second-largest cable company, Titus Communications. This is the first time Microsoft has bought a majority interest in a cable company. Microsoft acquired its 60% stake in Titus from MediaOne, a U.S. company that is selling off international assets as part of a merger with AT&T. Though Microsoft hasn't disclosed financial terms, its stake is reportedly worth US$934 million. Other investors in Titus include Toshiba and Itochu, a Japanese holding company. Titus' current cable subscriber base is small (90,000 homes) by U.S.
