In Brief: AT&T joins Microsoft/BT wireless services alliance

AT&T has joined the wireless Internet services alliance between British Telecom and Microsoft. Microsoft will provide the software platform—the upcoming Mobile Explorer—for wireless services on the two carriers’ networks and will also develop wireless applications based on Exchange 2000. Planned Microsoft services include e-mail, calendars, and address books, as well as—more mysteriously, on a phone—games, music, and electronic books. Given the failure of Microsoft’s Windows CE to gain hold in the telephony market, Microsoft intends to develop applications that run in any browser.
