In Brief: Beta Protocol Could Simplify OLAP

A newly posted XML for Analysis specification could simplify deployment of OLAP applications. OLAP is an analysis method for historical databases compiled from a company's operational data. Currently listed as a "beta" specification, XML for Analysis defines a protocol that enables client applications to locate, query, and update OLAP databases via the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), which is supported by many vendors (including Microsoft competitors IBM and Oracle) on Windows and other platforms.
