SQL Server 2008, 2008 R2 Receive Final Service Packs

Final service packs (SPs) for SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 arrived in Sept. 2014. The final SPs are an integrated packaging and release of numerous cumulative updates for the current versions and do not contain any new functionality. The release of an SP beyond the end of SQL Server 2008 mainstream support (July 8, 2014) is an exception to Microsoft's life-cycle policy. However, the release means that customers using the current versions (SQL Server 2008 SP3 and SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2) are required to install the new SPs within 12 months in order to receive support.
