Device CAL

A Device CAL (Client Access License) provides the right for a specific client device to be used by any person to access all running instances of a particular server-based product deployed by a customer’s organization.

Devices that commonly require a Device CAL include PCs, laptops/tablets, smartphones, and dumb terminals. However, under current Microsoft licensing rules, other autonomous devices connected to the organization’s network could also require Device CALs, such as temperature sensors and traffic lights.
