A CAL (Client Access License) provides the right for a client device or user to access all running instances of a particular server-based product within a customer’s organization, generally deployed on-premises. Access to each particular server product is licensed with its own unique CAL or set of CALs. In many cases, CALs can also be used to license access to Microsoft server products running on multitenant hardware at a service provider under a provision called License Mobility through SA.
