Version is used to designate a significant release of an on-premises product. New versions typically contain feature improvements compared to the prior product version. The right to use a newer version of a product almost always involves a fee in the form of active SA (Software Assurance) coverage on a preexisting perpetual license, an ongoing subscription license, or purchase of a new perpetual license for the new version (Windows 10 Pro is the major exception). Sometimes accompanying a new product version are changes to the license model, use rights, pricing, and edition lineup.
