Windows OS Will Require SHA-2 for Future Updates

Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, and Window Server 2008 SP2 require a SHA-2 code signed update by July 2019 to receive future updates. Previously, all Windows OS updates were signed using both the SHA-1 and SHA-2 hash algorithm. Due to weaknesses in the SHA-1 algorithm and to align with standards, all future updates to the Windows OS will only be signed using the SHA-2 algorithm. Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 will be the first versions impacted. Stand-alone updates that introduce SHA-2 code signing support will be released beginning in Mar. 2019.
