The Exchange Server and mobile OS teams have new leaders and the product team responsible for Microsoft’s online services development platform, including Live Mesh, has moved into the Windows group, among other recent organizational changes. New executives will also head Microsoft’s sales to governments and its China subsidiary.

This article covers all changes at the vice-presidential level and above in the last quarter of 2008, excluding recent changes in Microsoft’s Online Services Group. (For more information on the Online Services Group’s reorganization, see “Ex-Yahoo Search Boss to Lead Online” on page 24 of the Jan. 2009 Update.)

Changes in Product Groups

Organizational changes in early 2009 involved executives in several product groups:

David Treadwell, corporate vice president of Live Platform Services, is moving out of Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie’s organization and into the Windows and Windows Live Engineering organization headed by Senior Vice President Steven Sinofsky. The organizational change comes as Live Services, Microsoft’s emerging development platform for online services, has moved from incubation into production. More specifically, the shift could signal plans to move the consumer-facing Windows Live services and desktop clients to the Live Services platform. For example, the Live Mail desktop client and Hotmail service (overseen by Sinofsky’s group) could adopt Live Mesh technology (overseen by Treadwell’s group), which would help users synchronize e-mail contacts and calendar entries across multiple PCs and mobile devices.
