Updates to Endpoint Protection will be tied to Configuration Manager. The product dropped the Forefront brand to become part of System Center 2012, which was released in Apr. 2012. Administrators are required to use the Configuration Manager console to centrally manage security updates and policies.
For protecting Microsoft application servers, Protection 2010 for Exchange Server and Protection 2010 for SharePoint were released at the same times as their corresponding servers in Nov. 2009 and May 2010, respectively. Future releases of these protection products may coincide with new versions of their respective servers in 2013 and 2016. However, Microsoft has not announced any follow-on versions, and Exchange Server 2013 will include basic malware protection (as will Exchange Online). It is possible that Microsoft will include some form of malware protection in Exchange, SharePoint, and Lync Servers and discontinue the Forefront products. Two Forefront products (Protection 2010 for Exchange and Protection 2010 for SharePoint) can be managed centrally using Protection Server Management Console 2010.
