Analyst ReportSmall Business Server 2003 SP1
The first comprehensive service packs for the Standard and Premium Editions of Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 are now available. SBS 2003 is a line of specially integrated and priced bundles that include Windows Server 2003, Exchange Server 2003, and other products. SP1 rolls a number of important fixes into SBS 2003 and upgrades Premium Edition customers to Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004, the most recent version of Microsoft’s firewall and content caching server (which wasn’t completed when SBS 2003 shipped).
SBS 2003 comes in two major editions:
- Standard Edition includes Windows Server 2003 (with Windows SharePoint Services 2003 preinstalled) and Exchange Server 2003
- Premium Edition includes all of these products, and adds SQL Server 2000, FrontPage 2003, and the Standard Edition of ISA 2000.
Both editions are restricted to installation on a single server in businesses with 75 or fewer client PCs.
Although Microsoft has already released service packs for the individual server products and the SBS client software (primarily Windows XP and Outlook 2003), the two SBS SP1 service packs pull them together into unified installations, apply additional hotfixes, and change some of SBS’s settings to account for changes in the component product service packs. (For a chart of individual product service packs contained in SBS SP1, see “Service Packs in SBS 2003 SP1“.) SBS 2003 Standard Edition customers can either download the service pack or order a CD set. However, Premium Edition customers must order the CD set if they want the ISA Server 2004 upgrade.
