Analyst ReportBuild 2020 Delivers Windows 10 Dev-Focused Applications
- Several Windows 10 applications, primarily of interest to developers, were announced at Build 2020.
- Although some applications will be part of the Windows 2004 version that became generally available on May 27, 2020, many are rudimentary and in preview.
- These applications may convince some developers to give up their macOS and Linux devices in favor of Windows devices.
- As some of the applications are developed and supported by the open source community, contributors may be bound by additional agreements.
New and updated applications announced or demonstrated at Build 2020 in May include a Windows Package Manager, Windows Terminal, the Windows Subsystem for Linux 2, and new PowerToys. These applications are primarily developer focused but may be useful for administrators or other power users. They may make Windows-based devices more attractive to developers who currently prefer running macOS or Linux on their development workstations. Although some of these applications will be part of Windows 10 version 2004, the latest version of the OS, others are in preview, and some are supported as open source projects.
