  • SharePoint agents can empower users with default and custom low-code AI solutions for SharePoint sites.
  • Deployment and management controls are immature.
  • Because SharePoint agents are easy for users to create, organizations should tightly control pay as you go billing to minimize cost overruns.

SharePoint agents are AI-powered utilities that synthesize site content to answer questions and curate knowledge or deliver targeted insights and task-specific guidance. Authorized users can access a default agent on every site and/or custom agents in document libraries. To be authorized, users must have a Microsoft 365 (M365) Copilot license or be assigned to a pay as you go (PAYG) billing policy. Users with edit permissions can create or modify a custom agent. Both the creator and the intended users must have access to the content sources used by the SharePoint agents. However, administrative controls over agents are not mature, and cost controls cannot protect against cost overruns, so governance and training are critical.
