Azure OpenAI service enables developers to use large language models (LLMs) developed by OpenAI (a Microsoft partner) to create applications that support natural language input, text generation, summarization, and other features. Azure OpenAI service is one of several third-party models Microsoft provides in Foundry Models. Other options include models from Anthropic, DeepSeek, Meta, xAI, and others. Azure OpenAI is also the default service for M365 Copilot.

Near Term (Mid-2026─2027)
Azure OpenAI is expected to remain Microsoft’s premier platform for OpenAI models. However, the Microsoft-OpenAI relationship is less exclusive as OpenAI expands its own commercial offerings. Microsoft opened M365 Copilot to include Anthropic and is delivering its own models while positioning Foundry as a multi-model platform. Microsoft will continue incorporating the latest OpenAI models, but customers should continue to expect greater model choice and less dependence on any single AI provider. This diversification reduces vendor risk but may also increase dependency on Microsoft’s platform.
