GitHub Copilot Brings Another AI Consumption Unit to Track

GitHub Copilot has been available for about five years, but its packaging and billing continue to evolve. A June 2026 update introduced new billing units called GitHub AI Credits, which are exclusive to GitHub Copilot and replace its previously used premium request units (PRUs).

The new units are similar to others Microsoft uses for Copilots and agents, adding to a lengthy and confusing list of differently named units. Unfortunately, customers are burdened with the tasks of learning all of these units, predicting their usage (if possible), setting budgets, making pre-purchases (in some scenarios), monitoring consumption, and ensuring that alerts are configured and addressed when generated.
