GitHub Copilot is available in several tiers with varying capabilities and usage allowances (fig. 2). Free, Pro, and Pro+ tiers (not shown here) are available for individual usage. These options are typically not appropriate for medium to large organizations other than for evaluation and trial phases. Business and Enterprise tiers are most appropriate for medium to large organizations because they include features to manage GitHub Copilot usage across an organization.

GitHub Copilot Business

The Business tier delivers numerous features that assist software developers, features to help centrally manage GitHub Copilot licenses, and governance controls for how GitHub Copilot can be used, such as which of the Copilot’s features are enabled. The management and governance controls are critical requirements for most organizations.

Price: US$19 per user per month.

Requirements: Business tier prerequisite licensing depends on the Microsoft program through which it is bought. A GitHub Enterprise Cloud (GHEC) User Subscription License (User SL), which costs US$21 per user per month, is required when purchasing GitHub Copilot Business through a Cloud Solution Provider (CSP). Customers who purchase directly from Microsoft can purchase GitHub Copilot Business without purchasing a GitHub User SL or any other GitHub licenses.
