Visual Studio Online, a set of hosted services designed to make it easier to manage and build applications, is available in four subscription levels.

Visual Studio Online Stakeholder is a free level for all stakeholders in a development project, including nontechnical users who merely need to monitor the project’s ongoing deliverables. The stakeholder can typically view or monitor, but not update, the project status. (Features in gray boxes may have limited or reduced functionality in the free Stakeholder level.)

Visual Studio Online Basic, free for up to five users and US$20 per month for additional users, provides access to services for monitoring, accessing source code, building applications, and deploying applications to Azure. At this level, users can both monitor and change project status and files.

Visual Studio Online Professional, which costs US$45 per month per user, is similar to Visual Studio Online Basic but includes a locally installable Visual Studio Professional edition, which can be used as long as the user continues to pay the monthly subscription fee.
