This chart lists licenses associated with running Exchange Server 2010 on-premises along with the highest price (in U.S. dollars) a business customer in North America would pay through a volume purchasing program. (In most cases, the Open Business program price is used; if the license is unavailable through Open Business, a Select level A price is quoted instead.) Listed are both the price for the initial license and the annual cost of a Software Assurance (SA) subscription, which provides the right to upgrade to any versions released during the term of coverage and other benefits.

Listed first are server licenses that provide the right to run the two editions of the server software on a Windows Server machine, and Client Access Licenses (CALs), which provide the right for individuals or end-user devices to access Exchange. The Standard CAL covers the mailbox, calendaring, and other basic features, and the Enterprise CAL is an add-on license for voice mail, compliance-related features, and other advanced capabilities. The External Connector license, which permits an unlimited number of nonemployees of a company to access a particular Exchange Server machine, can sometimes be less costly overall than CALs for providing business partners, suppliers, customers, retirees, and alumni with mailboxes on the Exchange system. The External Connector licenses Standard CAL-level features only.
