With CodePlex, a new developer-oriented Web site, Microsoft hopes to create a community of developers working together on software projects that complement Microsoft products. Built on Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server and hosted by Microsoft, the site gives developers a way to collaborate and includes source code management and bug tracking capabilities. Although Microsoft is supporting CodePlex by submitting a number of projects that complement its core products and that use Microsoft’s Shared Source Licensing program, it is not placing limits on the types of projects developers create or the licensing terms they choose to apply to them.

Built on Team Foundation Server

CodePlex is based on two key Microsoft technologies: Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server (TFS) and ASP.NET. TFS provides the core team development features, such as the following:

  • Source code management-the ability to check out and check in changes to the code
  • Bug tracking
  • Project management, including
