As of Oct. 1, 2024, Microsoft is no longer manufacturing HoloLens headsets and is phasing out support. Microsoft issued a statement noting that the company will provide security and bug fixes for HoloLens 2 until Dec. 31, 2027, and for the original HoloLens headset until Dec. 10, 2024. Microsoft debuted HoloLens in 2015 and updated it to include a wider field of view, eye tracking, improved hand tracking, and more in 2019. Microsoft plans to invest in mixed-reality via first-party offerings and partner solutions, such as Meta’s Quest headset. However, the company is removing its Windows Mixed Reality components from Windows with the Windows 11 24H2 release, which began rolling out Oct. 1, 2024. In 2023, Microsoft was still pushing HoloLens as an industrial metaverse technology for Dynamics 365 customers and frontline workers. Some HoloLens technology was used to develop a hardened version of the product for the U.S. Army, but these Integrated Visual Augmented System (IVAS) devices have faced acceptance hurdles. Microsoft recently partnered with Anduril Industries to improve the IVAS headsets.
