  • SharePoint Online’s UI change, which will be mandatory by May 2026, reorganizes how employees work with information into three hubs.
  • “AI in SharePoint” repackages AI capabilities that surface content and governance issues but includes tools for content owners to remediate them.
  • SharePoint’s typical poor governance and content quality are exposed as liabilities because M365 Copilot depends on its data.
  • Even with AI assistance, user ownership remains critical to governing SharePoint content.

SharePoint’s new interface (in preview) embeds AI, amplifying the value and risk of the content used by M365 Copilot. An agentic layer helps site owners manage metadata and content life cycles but lacks governance enforcement and leaves gaps in addressing permission sprawl and ownership issues. However, M365 Copilot also exposes SharePoint content across M365, so organizations must prioritize information governance for compliance and decision-making. For organizations without M365 Copilot, the updated UI improves workflow but doesn’t resolve governance risks if Copilot is adopted later.
