  • SharePoint Advanced Management adds tools for managing site sprawl and content oversharing in SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business tenancies.
  • SAM has an ongoing role in preparing and securing content for Microsoft 365 Copilot.
  • Every SharePoint/Teams user requires licensing for SAM, either stand-alone or via a Microsoft Copilot license.
  • Third-party products may already fulfill these services in an organization

SharePoint Advanced Management (SAM) gives SharePoint Online administrators automated policies and content-restriction controls to manage site ownership, inactive sites, and overshared content. SAM tools decrease content security risks for Microsoft 365 Copilot and help reclaim storage costs. Administrators have AI-enhanced reports to monitor the tenancy and discover problem sites to remediate. SAM’s capabilities can be extended by Microsoft Purview’s sensitivity labels and Microsoft 365 Archive, which can also enhance content security and quality for Copilot and Search. However, since SAM is relatively new and evolving, organizations may decide an alternative mature third-party product with advanced features is worth the expense.
