By carefully managing changes and using the Windows Vista device driver model, Microsoft aims to minimize compatibility problems that might delay deployment of Windows 7. Because the majority of applications and devices that work with Vista should work with Windows 7, developers whose applications work on Vista have likely already resolved any compatibility issues. But to exploit new features in Windows 7, including the replacement of components with Windows Live counterparts and support for touch screens, some further changes to existing applications may be needed.
