Azure Automation helps automate deployment, management, and other repetitive IT processes. It plays a role similar to that of System Center Orchestrator software on-premises.

Product: Automation

Near Term (2025–2026)

Automation run-time environment is generally available. Run-time environment lets customers create separate environments to run runbooks. Each environment can use a specific script language and version and a set of packages that are required for the runbooks that run within it.

Support for PowerShell 7.4 and Python 3.10 is generally available.

Limits on the number of Automation accounts per subscription and the number of concurrent running jobs per Automation account have been increased.

Long Term (Beyond 2026)

Azure Automation State Configuration is being retired on Sept. 30, 2027. Microsoft provides guidance for migrating to Azure Machine Configuration, which provides additional features.

Desired State Configuration for Azure VMs is being retired on Mar. 31, 2028, and customers should use Azure Machine Configuration instead.
