Azure Event Grid is a cloud message broker service that is integrated with most Azure services. It routes messages (also called events) between components of an Azure solution. For example,  an Azure Storage instance might use Azure Event Grid to report unexpectedly fast space consumption to a management application.  

Event Grid also has become Microsoft’s message broker for MQTT, a publish-subscribe protocol for Internet of Things (IoT) systems of interconnected devices. IoT and MQTT play important roles in manufacturing, energy, transportation, and many other businesses that depend on real-time monitoring and control. Event Grid could be an important part of such solutions when they are deployed on Azure.

Event Grid will continue adding features from the MQTT 5 specification. For example, the following MQTT 5 features became generally available in the second quarter of 2026.
