Azure Service Bus is a managed enterprise messaging service that enables applications, services, and business systems to exchange messages reliably without requiring direct connections. It helps organizations decouple applications, integrate cloud and on-premises systems, and build scalable event-driven architectures. Within Microsoft’s AI strategy, Service Bus provides the reliable workflow and orchestration backbone that connects AI applications, agents, and business processes.

Near Term (Mid-2026–2027)

Despite several internal overlapping offerings, Service Bus remains strategically important as Microsoft’s transactional messaging backbone, including reliable orchestration and a workflow layer for AI applications, agents, and business processes. However, recent updates indicate a focus on resiliency, security, and compliance rather than major innovation.

Organizations should view it as a stable long-term platform for application integration and AI-driven workflows, not a growth area expected to deliver new business capabilities. Risk is concentrated around legacy SDK retirement and modernization requirements.
