Application Insights (part of Azure Monitor) uses telemetry to monitor applications running in development, test, and production environments and collects data on application usage, performance, and availability. The service is targeted toward Web applications and cloud and on-premises back-end services.

Product: Application Insights

Near-Term Roadmap (2026–2027)

Support for API keys to query Application Insights data is being retired on Sept. 30, 2026. (This date was changed from Mar. 31, 2026.) Customers must use Entra ID authentication (via managed identities or service principal accounts) instead after this date.

URL ping tests will be retired in Sept. 2026; consider using Standard Web tests instead.

Application Insights SDK version 3 is now available, bringing new compatibility with OpenTelemetry, a popular open-source framework for working with telemetry data.

Auto-instrumentation for Java and Node workloads running on Azure Kubernetes Service, which enables monitoring without any modifications to source code, became generally available in May 2026.
