Azure Cache for Redis is an in-memory data caching and messaging broker service based on the Redis software. It stores copies of frequently used data from a main database into a memory cache on multiple servers, removing the need to continually query the main database to enable fast access and reduced latency.

All tiers of Azure Cache for Redis are being retired in favor of Azure Managed Redis, a new Redis offering that reached general availability in May 2025.

Available Redis Versions

Redis Open Source 6.0 is available in the Basic, Standard, and Premium tiers.

Redis Enterprise 7.2 is available in the Enterprise and Enterprise Flash tiers.

Customers should not expect newer versions of Redis (Open Source or Enterprise) in the remaining lifespan of Cache for Redis.

Managed Redis currently supports Redis Enterprise 7.4 and will support 8.0 at a future date.

Recent Updates

Migration tooling is available. Most tooling to help customers migrate from Cache for Redis to Managed Redis became available in April 2026. Migration tooling from Enterprise tiers is generally available, and migration tooling from Basic, Standard, and Premium tiers remains in public preview.
