Azure Functions is Microsoft’s serverless execution platform for running code in response to business events, schedules, API calls, and system changes without managing infrastructure. Organizations use it to automate processes, connect applications, process data, and expose business capabilities as services. As Microsoft expands its AI platform, Functions is used to power agent actions, enterprise integrations, and workflow execution that allow AI systems to perform real work rather than simply generate answers.

Near Term (Mid-2026–2027)
Azure Functions is becoming part of Microsoft’s broader application execution strategy for AI-enabled enterprises. Rather than serving solely as a serverless development tool, it’s increasingly positioned as the layer that enables applications, data services, business processes, and AI agents to take action across enterprise environments. However, the primary governance consideration is modernization readiness, not the platform, as Microsoft’s investments in AI, .NET, and cloud-native architectures may require organizations to periodically update applications, skills, and operational practices.
