.NET is Microsoft’s unified, enterprise-grade, open source platform for building and running applications for Windows, Linux, macOS, and cloud environments like containers, serverless compute, and PaaS runtimes. It uses a common runtime, libraries, and tooling for building business applications across Web, desktop, mobile, and service-based workloads and is becoming the main way to build AI-enabled applications and workflows in code. In many organizations, .NET and its predecessor, .NET Framework, run a significant portion of the application portfolio, so decisions about versioning, support, and modernization can affect technical standards, supplier strategy, application risk, and the cost and timing of modernizing apps.
