Azure Policy is a free service that’s critical for deployment governance, and it should be included in Azure customer planning and processes. It allows IT managers to delegate Azure resource provisioning to users such as developers while ensuring security, cost, and compliance requirements. Hundreds of built-in policies shorten the required time investment in the service by reducing the need for custom policy implementations.

Near-Term Roadmap (2026–2027)

A new Compliance Substate feature shows resources that are exempted from a policy but are still in compliance with that policy. This helps determine resources that don’t need to be exempted.

Azure Policy for Kubernetes supports Validating Admission Policy (VAP) using Common Expression Language (CEL). VAP is a streamlined way to enforce Kubernetes policies.

Azure Policy support for the Foundry Models model router is in preview. Policies can specify approved models, routing rules, and other aspects of model selection.
