Azure Site Recovery (ASR) is a subscription-based service that helps organizations use Azure infrastructure to establish disaster recovery (DR) for VM-based workloads. It works between an on-premises site and Azure or between two Azure regions. ASR replicates machines or VMs from one site to another and can monitor service availability and orchestrate recovery in the event of a service outage or disaster.

Near-Term Roadmap (2026–2027)

So-called high-churn VMs with IOPS of up to 500MB per second are supported, allowing recovery of high-activity VM disks, such as those used by certain databases.

Support for Azure VMs running Windows with NVMe disk controllers is generally available.

Support for Azure VMs running Linux with NVMe disk controllers is in preview.

Performance Plus managed disk replication is now supported.

A preprovisioned network interface card (NIC) resource can be used in the target region with Azure to Azure failover (a feature called Bring Your Own NIC [BYON]). Previously, a new NIC resource was created automatically during failover; the new feature adds flexibility for configuring the failover region.
